Sustainable Blacksburg worked with the Blacksburg Farmers Market Education Committee to start an NRV Local Food Coalition with a focus to educate and raise awareness about the Farmers' Market in Blacksburg in the town community as well as the student and VT campus population. A focus of this coalition is to work to have more locally grown and raised produce and meats in our downtown restaurants as well as raise advertising efforts to promote the Farmers Market and rally behind buying local food! All local groups and citizens are invited to join the efforts through this coalition. The first official meeting was in November 2009 where the movie Fresh was shown, a potluck dinner of local food was shared and a discussion about the goals and efforts of the coalition was had. Several meetings have occurred since then.
