Sustainable Blacksburg is working with the Greenway/Bikeway/Sidewalk Corridor Committee of the Town of Blacksburg to improve and increase bike travel and greenway development in our area. The goal is to put more people on bicycles more often and to help fund a Blacksburg bicycle loop project that will promote usage of sharrows (shared-road markings) so that bicycles are acknowledged as a means of transportation on roadways around town.
Town of Blacksburg Bikeway / Pedestrian Master Plan Committee Goals
- Expand bicycle and pedestrian facilities and access throughout town, particularly between neighborhood areas, employment centers, shopping areas, schools, and recreational sites.
- Make bicycling and walking integral parts of daily life in Blacksburg by implementing and maintaining a bikeway / sidewalk / greenway network, providing end-of-trip facilities for bicycles, and improving bicycle / pedestrian / transit integration. Encourage bicycle use and make bicycling and walking safer and more convenient.
- Encourage bicycling and walking as forms of regular, non-polluting recreation and exercise to achieve fitness, health and wellness and quality of life improvements for residents of Blacksburg.
- Include evaluation of bicycle and pedestrian use in all transportation projects.
- Promote bicycling and walking as regular modes of transportation within Blacksburg.
